I think you're overlooking what he inherited, after a respectable 06 team went 10-6 they spent the last 3 years reeling in all kinds of talent via free agency. The Pats instead went the draft route, cutting ties with veterans and rebuilt without compromising their competitiveness. Ryan is no doubt a great defensive mind and probably a close second to Belichick.
