Why are the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC South if Indianapolis is in the north?

Because that's how it broke down. All the AFC South members were the newer AFC franchises (Colts moved to Indy from Baltimore) when the NFL reorganized. Jags, Texans, Titans (they moved from Houston Oilers) were the newbies.
